Jasper Bay Residence
Architect: ETS Architecture
Builder: Ascent Building Company
Perched high above Jasper Bay on a rocky bluff, this functional family retreat maximizes the views to the west toward Mt. Baker, with Watmough Bay and the Salish Sea toward the south. Large-scale sliding doors open to a wrap-around deck off the central gathering space, and a dramatic cantilevered roof protects the elevated deck from weather and provides carefully considered light and shade patterns.
With limited access on Lopez Island, the home was designed to minimize concrete volume, and reduce the impact on the site by supporting much of the elevated structure on isolated post and pier footings. We collaborated with the geotechnical engineer to verify the stability of the exposed bedrock bluff, and establish a strategy for global anchorage.
